Honestly, after watching last night's Emmy Awards, I'm sort of wondering if I'm in a position to dub anything "The Best."  Almost all my favorite shows and actors lost in their categories.  Was it just me or were the choices really weird?  Or maybe you all watch Damages.  Losers.

Anyway, all I know is that there wasn't nearly enough Hugh Laurie for my taste.  And why doesn't Julia Louis Dreyfus ever win?  Booo.  Hissssss.  Blah, blah, BLAH. BLAAAAAAH.

But anyway . . . at some point today, my story about this year's lovely Kate Somerville Emmy Suite will be posting on Blackburn + Sweetzer.  (Yes, it's shameless self-promotion time again).  So keep your eyes peeled.  Plus, as far as I'm concerned, the suite might have been more entertaining than the show itself.

And it was definitely more fair.  Just ask Julia Louis Dreyfus.  She hearts K.S. too.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go stalk Hugh.  And find out what the hell Breaking Bad is.  And also what that red blob was attached to the side of Padma's dress.  Maybe she lost a bet (or a high stakes quick fire).  Looked that way, if you ask me.  But, then, you didn't.

You're too busy watching FX.  Loser.

P.S. Please excuse my rampant bitterness, but I mean JEEZ.  What's a girl to do?

The Best Link Today:

Greetings from east of the Mississippi!

Anyway, I know I said I wasn't blogging this week and really I am TRYING not to work (although failing somewhat miserably).  BUT when I saw this news from Blackburn + Sweetzer, I just had to share:

The vacant storefront pictured above is apparently soon-to-be a Magnolia Bakery!  Yup, that's right.  The very same cupcake haven of NYC fame.  Now some people swear by these treats (waiting on crazy long lines), while others scoff at the hype.  But we'll be able to decipher for real, as this spot is opening up literally on my corner.

I propose a "Cupcake Off," if you will.  A classic yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting (or some such classic version) from Joan's on Third, Toast, Crumbs, Sprinkles, Buttercake Bakery and, yes, Magnolia and we finally figure out which cupcake truly reigns supreme.  If we waited for Doughboys to open, we could even include a Red Velvet category, but I dunno–that might be too long to wait.

I'm willing to risk a full throttle lactard stomach ache to figure this out for you LINTY readers and I'm enlisting my trusty gal pals (though they don't know it yet) for help.

But for now, I'm lying on a beach.  In fact, all this talk of cake and taste tests is making me sleepy.  Night, night!

So, it was Blackburn + Sweetzer's bday last week and so a bunch of us met for drinks at nearby Dominick's (pictured in her pretty photo above).  I've always been a fan of their courtyard (not to mention the old world spaghetti and meatballs recipe), but it was particularly festive to hang in their little lounge area and sip wine etc.

Of course I'm in the middle of gabbing in the pic of me (what else is knew?  It's like I never shut up!), but, regardless, I love to make the pages of B + S.  Especially when there are risotto balls involved.

Happy Monday!

P.S. I've decided to make weekly resolutions–why wait until December 31?  This week I resolve to make more cash.  By the end of this week, I plan to make a million dollars.  Maybe five million.  I'll make a collage about it and then it will come true.  That's like The Secret, right?  I'm just PUTTING IT OUT THERE.  Then I'll just go to the movies and maybe by the time it's finished, everything will have figured itself out, right?  RIGHT.

The Best Link Today:

Blackburn + Sweetzer posted a multi-sale list today (multi baaalllll; sorry, flashback to Mario Andretti pinball), including Stuart Weitzman event with free Sprinkles Cupcakes like the above.  Very Sex and The City, being a stiletto and all.

"I'm Samantha, I have sex with eeeverybody . . ."—sorry, but has anyone else watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall on HBO lately?  If not, I apologize for the slightly obscure reference.

So, enjoy the sales!  I'll be in Palm Springs (yet again, which is crazy) roasting my ass off in 105 degree heat by the pool, wearing a massively brimmed, floppy, straw sun hat.  And this is a good thing cause my tummy definitely does not need another cupcake to help it grow.

Just kidding, Mom.  I promise not to tan too much.  Umbrellas for me all the way.

Who am I kidding?  My mom never reads this stuff.  I'm going to have to re-live this entire conversation with her over the phone.

Let me try again:

Just kidding, Dad!  I promise not to tan at all or buy another bag because I know (as even a highly evolved man) you really don't understand why we women need so many effing purses.  Oh, and yes, I know, I shouldn't be complaining about my tummy.  Stomach, I mean stomach.  Cause "tummy" probably annoys you as much as "yummy."

Am I right or am I right?

Today's Best Link:

Well, I may be 3,000 miles away, but I still can't ignore a major LA retail newsflash.  Blackburn + Sweetzer reports that Madison and Diavolina have joined forces to became one big Third Street shopping Mecca (offering, wait for it, a bunch of parking; novel in that hood).  Well, in this economy retail is never a sure thing (sort of like ordering fish at a diner), but these two beloved LA standards may just be able to pull this off, mini-Fred Segal-styles.

Represent, yo.

Uh oh.  I think I'm getting a little too far back to my homegirl NYC roots.  Scary.

The Best Link Today:

So, Blackburn + Sweetzer blogs almost daily about amazing sales, but just wanted to highlight today, as her list featured Madison (which, in my book, is the greatest cause it includes several amazing lines like Chloe, Lanvin etc.) and the sale doesn't start until Thursday.  Good heads up cause, I don't know about you, but I like to get greased up and ready for a good sale in advance.

Don't ask.

Another recent sale listing

The Best Link Today:

In my humble opinion, Blackburn + Sweetzer has a few MUST-READ posts on her blog this week:

First, she totally links to THE POCKET LINT Spicy Tofu Stew story today, so she obviously knows a good thing when she sees it.

Second, she checked out La Terza's new less-expensive, more down home Italian incarnation Minestraio (Exhibit A, above) in a timely manner.

Third, Malia Mills is offering B + S readers $50-off her amazing suits (which, FYI, I absolutely swear by). Mills designs the best bathing suits for chestier girls particularly; she somehow morphs amazing styles that would normally be obscene or just wrong-all-the-way-home into totally flattering and wearable (and not cheesy or too bra-esque).

I know I sound like an ad, but I really do love her, and often when I'm in NYC I head over to her showroom, where on Tuesdays you used to be able to buy suits for wholesale or at least cheap. (Well, cheap-er.  These well-made puppies are expensive, which is why every $50 counts.)  Seems like "the outlet" is closed for now, but maybe it'll reopen soon?  Keep an eye on the site!

Fourth, B + S blogs about the soon-to-be-arriving Chloe on Melrose and Corner Bakery right in our hood.  Of course, I'm equally, if not more, excited about the Staples opening on La Cienega next door.  Now I officially never have to get in my car during the day again (sorta).

Long live writerly agoraphobia! (Or at least deep seeded fear of annoying parking situations and traffic.  Actually, probably more accurately, long live my NYC roots!)

(B + S Features Jennifer George NYC's Necklaces Above)

The Best Link Today:

My taste skews pretty classic, so–for contrast–I'm a sucker for an eclectic or bold accessory to liven things up.  Enter Jennifer George NYC, whose new one-of-a-kind necklace collection (created from vintage treasures scouted from NYC to Toronto and beyond) are a layerer's dream.

Our trusty pal Blackburn + Sweetzer reports the deets on the designer's LA trunk show at beloved accessory shop Intuition on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm.  Jennifer's unique bijoux is not yet on sale at any LA boutiques, so this is a rare chance to grab some bohemian props (although I believe you can order via contact info on the website too).

Best of all, no two are alike, so your piece is supremely unique.

Just like your own eclectic ass, right?

The Best Link Today:

Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is Golden State.

Actually, the new friend is Golden State, as  B + S reports that the resto will finally be opening it's Fairfax doors on March 12th.  The website is up and she even snagged an early menu draft (though it seems to be down off G.S.'s site right now–oopsy–too early?).

The spot will specialize in (what else?) Cali's best offerings, especially in the sausage department from spicy lamb to English banger.  I just think ordering "English banger" sounds fun and dirty.  Cabbage and Jalapeno Slaw sounds pretty tasty.  And I believe there will be a local wine and beer component too.

Golden State is another addition to the deeply traif restaurants that keep popping up on largely hassidic Fairfax and in the Beverly vicinity.  First there was Milk and then Animal (never together OF COURSE) and now this. (If you're curious, you can read my LA Confidential article on Animal).

Anyway, not sure how the hassidic peeps feel, but it sounds pretty damn Golden to me!

(Blackburn + Sweetzer's Pics of Newly Expanded Le Petit Bistro)

The Best Link Today:

When Comme Ca is too busy to accommodate (which–even in this dreadful economy–is often), some peeps shuffle around the corner to less sceney Le Petit Bistro.  Okay, I admit, I've actually (shamefully) never been (I'll wait a long time for Comme Ca's fleur de sel cream puffs), but Blackburn + Sweetzer raves that this favorite French spot has expanded to include patio seating and a larger bar & lounge area for hanging pre-meal or for cocktails only dish sessions.  And I'm always in favor of more cocktail/wine spots in my hood.

Plus, if B + S vouches, then I believe.  I'll check it out and then go oui, oui, oui all the way home.

xo – N.

P.S.  Check out this blogger collaboration between B + S and Food Marathon, where they get together and eat their way through a few spots on Third Street.
