NYC (SOHO): THE BEST CHEAP SHOE SURPRISE

By Nora Zelevansky / April 14th, 2009

Based on my constant blathering about Sigerson Morrison, you all know I'm not exactly a discount shoe girl.  So, I certainly wasn't tempted to stop when my sis and I wandered past an (gasp!) Payless en route from a J. Crew Sample Sale to the new Top Shop.  (Are you jel???  Don't be.  Those preppy J. Crew mofos don't even let you try stuff on.  I mean, how the hell are you supposed to buy a strapless sundress without trying it on?  Still, you can feel free to feel envious of the Top Shop visit though.  That was AWESOME.  More to come on that.)

Anyhoooz, we were just commenting on the incongruity of a Payless in the middle of Soho, when Claudette remembered an inkling of something about high-end designers doing lines for the cheapo shoe company (a la H & M, Target and now peeps like Charlotte Ronson's "I Heart Ronson" line for J.C. Penny).  So, yup, we went into Payless and found that Claud was in fact correct.  Both Abaeté and Alice + Olivia have created new spring collections for Payless at $38 a pop (and 1/2-off for the second pair).

Turns out that you can have your high-end shoes and eat them too . . . and still have a second pair to wear around.  Even as you throw up the first pair.  Cause you really shouldn't eat pleather or leather or whatever.  It's not good for you and it's DEFINITELY not eco-friendly.

Just saying.
